Legendary Murders, or How Merlin Writers Killed Two Characters With One Botched Plot

As most of us in Merlin fandom are readily aware, our beloved show takes quite a few liberties with the legends behind the wizard Merlin and the Once and Future King. I recently stumbled upon John Erskine's novel Galahad: Enough of His Life to Explain His Reputation, in my local Half-Priced Books and I have since learned more about the mythical son of Lancelot and Elaine.

The rest of the essay may be found here, at my journal.

Notes: Please take this for the farce it is intended to be. If you do not know the meaning of satire, then you are far, far too young to be visiting Livejournal in the first place, and therefore have no call to take issue with this piece. I wrote it simply to express my playful derision of some of the show's more risky departures from the commonly accepted version of Arthurian legend, not to offend, embarrass, or falsely enlighten anyone. That said, if you found this as wryly amusing as I hoped, feel free to let me know. Constructive (and funny) comments are always welcome.

Warnings: This satirical essay discusses events which take place in season four of Merlin, and therefore should not be read if the idea of spoilers is distasteful.

Title: when all these futile dreams fall away, only you and i remain

Rating: K+/PG
Pairing: Merlin/Morgana
Spoilers: For S4, especially 4.11
Summary: After Arthur refuses to confide in or trust him, Merlin finds himself in the most unexpected of places.
Disclaimer: I don't own Merlin. If I did, I'd, you know, know what I was doing with my life. And one of the lines in here is actually from a book called The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner (which is amazing and has inspired me before).

Available HERE at my journal.

Mostly written because I've been catching up on this season, which is awesome, and I have all these feelings. X-posted at spell_secrets.

So I'm new into this amazing fandom (thank you for there being a slash-free community!) and am eager to meet other Merlin fans.

Anyway, I was interested to see what other fans had to say about something that I've been wondering about for the past few days. If this type of post isn't allowed mods then feel free to delete it! :)

I've noticed that nearly every reference to Merlin's newest wardrobe addition is rather...negative. No one seems to like it, both in regards to Merlin's character and how it looks on Colin, and I'm truly curious as to why. especially because I think he's rather attractive in it but honestly I think Colin is adorable in anything he wears

As I understand it, purple is a color of royalty, and in the medieval times peasants and commoners weren't allowed to wear it. This color was reserved for the nobles and the like. And so for Merlin to show up in this fourth season in purple from the beginning...I find that fascinating. They had to have made that choice for a reason. I feel like it's a way of showing how Merlin is sort of moving up in status, to where he's been granted the privilege to wear something usually reserved for nobility.

I feel like this is Arthur's way of thanking Merlin for standing by him when they planned to take back Camelot. Lancelot, Gwaine, Percival, and Elyan were all Knighted by Arthur as a thank you for their loyalty and services. Couldn't this be Arthur's way of promoting Merlin? We all know he's not suited to be a Knight even though he has the courage and loyalty to be one and not to mention he looks incredible in the chainmail and robe so it's obvious he can't be Knighted. And we all know that Arthur isn't the best with words when it comes to this sort of thing--as a man of action he shows how he feels rather than says.

What are your thoughts?

Title: Pieces of Home
Word Count: 7,135
Characters/Pairings: Merlin, Arthur, Gwaine, Lancelot, Gwen, Elyan, Leon, Percival, (Eventual mentions of Arthur/Gwen and Gwen/Lancelot are inevitable. However, it should be noted that this story focuses on Merlin's care and friendship for Arthur's knights, and is therefore meant to be gen, rather than a story which focuses on the romance between any of the characters.)
Warnings/Spoilers: Possibly a few canon inaccuracies, Americanisms, characters for Season 3, including the finale, nothing for season 4
Summary: It all started when Percival talked about his mother's elderberry pie.
Notes: This is a fic that I started working on in February, which was put on hold around May, and I finally finished it yesterday. I have plans to make this a series, and already have parts of it written, so we'll see what happens. As it stands, this arc could technically stand alone, but I would prefer to expand on certain motifs which didn't receive as much love from me as they should have in the particular part.
